RT - HENRYK JANUS – the role of National Platforms, Poland example
The first one, highlighted the central role of National Platforms in fostering trust and collaboration to combat sports corruption effectively. The discussion drew on Poland's experience in establishing a robust National Platform, revealing key strategies for success. It was presented by HENRYK JANUS, the coordinator of the Polish National Platform, and representative of the Polish Ministy of sport and Tourism.
One of the key takeaways is the importance of educating athletes, coaches, and referees about integrity in sports to prevent corruption at its roots. Building trust and cooperation among diverse stakeholders—from National Platforms to public authorities, sports organizations, and betting regulators—is also essential for coordinated action.
The discussion also emphasized the value of regional cooperation to share information and expertise across borders, as well as the need for data analysis to identify potential corruption risks by monitoring suspicious betting patterns and analyzing vulnerabilities in specific sports.
Open communication and information exchange among all stakeholders involved in combating sports corruption were highlighted as crucial for building trust and achieving results.
The overall message that resonated throughout the round table was clear: Collaboration is key. National Platforms must forge strong partnerships with various stakeholders to effectively tackle sports corruption. By establishing an environment of trust, shared responsibility, and coordinated action, we can collectively safeguard the integrity of sports.
2. RT – Anna SEMENOVA - EU Athletes, Taking better care of professional and elite athletes
Anna Semenova, representing EU Athletes, shed light on the critical role of player associations in safeguarding athletes from detrimental influences like match-fixing. She emphasized that athletes are the lifeblood of sport, often vulnerable pawns in the face of criminal networks. Player associations, therefore, stand as crucial allies in protecting both athletes and the integrity of sport.
Player associations actively develop and deliver impactful educational programs tailored to athletes, delivered by trusted voices, to increase awareness and resilience against misconduct.
Player associations go beyond education, supporting athletes in personal development, mental health, and overall well-being. This holistic approach strengthens them from within, making them less susceptible to external pressures.
Tackling competition manipulation requires a united front – strong leadership, collaboration, and integrity from athletes, sport bodies, governments, the betting industry, and law enforcement. Knowledge sharing and coordinated efforts across national, European, and international levels are crucial for effective protection.
The discussion highlighted the significant impact of these wrongdoings on athletes' lives, careers, and mental health. This underscores the urgency of prioritizing comprehensive support systems, including readily available mental health resources, and fostering a supportive environment around athletes.
3. RT – IOC/NOC - Luiza ZÅ‚otkowska Polish NOC
Luiza ZÅ‚otkowska, a decorated Olympian and representative of the Polish NOC, outlined the Olympic Movement's crucial role in protecting the integrity of sport. She underscored the three pillars upon which this mission rests: Legislation and Regulations, Education and Awareness Raising, and Monitoring, Intelligence, and Investigation.
The Olympic Movement Unit emphasizes activating NOCs through various actions. Regulations are implemented both by the NOC itself and by national federations. Awareness-raising efforts include disseminating messages and appointing "Believe in Sport" ambassadors. Finally, intelligence gathering involves establishing reporting mechanisms, collaborating with relevant authorities, and leveraging National Platforms.
The presentation focused also on the Olympic Movement Code. This critical document serves as the bedrock for preventing competition manipulation, setting forth clear guidelines and protocols.
The discussion emphasized the critical need for a comprehensive approach to protecting sports from manipulation. By equipping athletes with knowledge, support, and protective measures, the Olympic Movement can foster a culture of integrity and empower them to resist undue pressures.

4.RT – PATRICK VAJDA – Role of referees – IFSO
Patrick Vajda, a veteran referee and founder of the International Federation of Sports Officials (IFSO), shed light on the critical role referees play in safeguarding the integrity of sports. Drawing on his extensive experience, he outlined several key insights:
1. Patrick Vajda highlighted the dual role referees often occupy. They are both victims of media criticism and accusations for mistaken calls, but also guardians of fair play, responsible for upholding competition integrity.
2. Maintaining objectivity is paramount for referees, but facing constant pressure and potential temptations from coaches, players, and even spectators can be challenging. Vajda emphasized the need for a "steel armor" to resist manipulation and remain neutral.
3. A surprising finding – 75% of top-level referees in France were unaware of the ban on betting on their own sport, exposing a crucial gap in education and communication.
4. The refereeing role is not without its dangers. Verbal abuse is common, and physical assaults, ranging from minor injuries to even fatalities, sadly occur. This risk can discourage many passionate individuals from becoming referees.
5. Despite the challenges, referees act as frontline observers, often picking up on unusual play patterns or behaviors that may indicate attempted manipulation. Their keen eyes and adherence to protocols can be crucial in flagging suspicious activity.
The discussion emphasized the critical need for comprehensive strategies to protect and empower referees. These include robust training programs on anti-manipulation measures, raising awareness of legal regulations, and providing avenues for confidential reporting of suspicious activity. By supporting and safeguarding referees, we can strengthen their crucial role as guardians of fair play and uphold the integrity of sport.
In conclusion, we can summarize that the convergence of various elements including the cooperation within the NP, athletes and officials protection and education ensures a more resilient sporting environment that upholds integrity, and mitigates the risks posed by manipulation in sport.
